Self-Soothing
Self soothing is about comforting, nurturing and being kind to yourself.
Sometimes we find ourselves swamped by painful feelings. We have habitual and automatic ways of responding to times like this but have made a conscious decision to make a change - to enlarge our coping and managing.
Self soothing ideas are simple suggestions for things we can to to interrupt these habitual and automatic responses.
Start by trying out some of these things. In time you will know what works for you and you will likely have a list of your own.
These suggestions help us to soothe ourselves by quieting and calming the mind, and by fostering greater awareness, enjoyment and cultivation of healthy positive experiences.
When you know what you find helpful, make a list. Keep it somewhere handy so that when you are struggling you can pull it out and make a conscious choice to do something to help yourself. You may want to share your list with a trusted friend who can also encourage you to do something from your list when you are too overwhelmed to do more than call for some support.
These ideas and the awareness they bring will, I hope, enable you to face the hard days that inevitably come, with a greater sense of your own capacity to care for yourself and stand strong and tall in your recovery journey.
